Crescent City Classic – Why Brian Runs
For Brian Sands, the Crescent City Classic isn’t about running.
“Running isn’t my area of expertise,” he says with a laugh. “I walk! I take my time! I admire the beautiful buildings along the way and chat with anyone I know. I’m happy if I finish in under 2 hours.”
Yet, year after year, Brian has been the top fundraiser for the Crescent City Classic’s Run For It! charity program. This initiative allows participants to raise money for a nonprofit of their choice, waiving their entry fee for the 10K race in the process if they raise over $200.
So, what keeps Brian coming back every year since 2014?
For one, it’s the traditions. He looks forward to seeing familiar faces every Saturday before Easter. “There’s a big group that dresses up in tuxedo jackets, top hats, and running shorts. They hand out red and white paper carnations along the route. It’s a party for them, and it’s always fun to see them.”
And then there’s the unmistakable spirit of New Orleans. “The best part is the costumes—Supermen and Superwomen, giant chickens, lucha libre wrestlers, even a giant carrot. You never know what you’ll see along the course.”
But Brian’s biggest motivation is the cause he supports. “Last year, I raised over $51,000 for Covenant House,” he says. “And this year, I’m looking to beat that.” Since 2014, Brian has raised more than $290,000 for Covenant House, and he’s not slowing down.
For those considering joining Run For It! for the first time, Brian has simple advice: “You can jog, walk, stroll, or even skip—go at your own pace.” As for fundraising, “It’s easy to ask for money when it’s for a great cause like Covenant House. Donations start at just $5. Ask your friends, colleagues—everyone you know. By race day, you’ll have made a difference, and then you can just enjoy the experience.”
On Saturday, April 19, 2025, the Crescent City Classic returns. Will you join Brian this year? Sign up today at this link to make a difference for the youth of Covenant House!
